Year 4 News

Learning in Year 4

with Mrs Coulter and Mrs Keough

As we reflect upon Term 2, we have much to celebrate in Year 4.

Over the course of the term, we were incredibly busy writing a variety of genres. Most recently, we explored Haiku and Diamante poetry.

These poetry types allowed us to consolidate our learning around syllables, nouns, verbs and adjectives, whilst sharpening our handwriting and ICT skills.

During Religious Education we explored the narratives of those in the New Testament and learned how to use The Bible referencing system to locate stories. We also explored Pentecost and the gifts of the Holy Spirit.

Our Mathematical learning was rich and diverse. The students have especially enjoyed learning about Likert scales, being involved in a living Likert scale and creating their own scales to survey their peers in relation to their school experiences.

The revision of multiplication facts strengthened our numerical fluency, whilst the exploration of fractions has extended our thinking around parts of numbers and whole numbers.

We also explored 3D objects through sketching and creating.

Our Guided Inquiry has been carefully linked with our History unit. We drew, wrote and created in order to learn about what life was like in England and in Australia before colonisation occurred.

Students sketched hulks, looked at artefacts and created artefacts. We painted gum leaves as part of our contribution to Reconciliation Week, and Trish Ellis supported our leanrning through connecting the Indigenous perspective around Australia's history into our Dhurga lessons.

We created art for the Eurobodalla Shire Council Calendar Art Competition. Students learnt about endangered animals in our area and made a picture promoting caring for our local endangered animals. We can’t wait to see if any of our art features on the calendar this year!

One of our learning highlights was our weekly sharing. Students honed their public speaking skills by sharing their family’s narrative. We have an outstandingly and rich history within our Year 4 families. We heard stories of ancestors who worked on the Sewers Canal, heroes recognised with special medals and certificates, a Rat of Tibet and we listened to tales of migrants who came to Australia for a better life. Each student’s story was unique and they have been incredibly proud to talk about their family history.

We are all very excited to see what the second half of the year will bring!
